Hercules Ryders Act 110 – A beginner’s Review

To get a sports bicycle was my long time dream and it came true last week. Got a Hercules Ryders Act 110. I was searching in bikeszone.com and
other online forums for quite a some time for bike related information. Hercules Ryders Act 110 is an Indian Hybrid bike from TI cycles of India.
It cost Rs 9700 in RR cycles Madiwala (Bangalore).

Specifications:
Bike comes with Shimano 21 speed gears, alloy frame, shimano gear shifters with integrated brake levers on the handle bar. The saddle, handle and the wheels have quick release adjustment options. 700*35C tyres are slightly thicker than the normal road bikes and are thinner than MTB’s.  Wheels don’t have suspensions and no disc brakes.

I rode the bike from Madiwala to Electronic city (14 Km’s), a good distance for a beginner, without any breakes and it took around 40 minutes. I couldn’t explore the bike much because of road traffic and for most part I had to be in lower gear combinations. Towards the end I felt a slight back pain and both the wrists went numb. This is because of either saddle height or the handle bar adjustments.

Next day morning I moved towards Jigani. I lifted the handle bar up by about 50 degrees this time (Initially it was perpendicular to with the front wheel
forks). The quick release levers are really handy and helps you make all the adjustments on your own. The route I took (Electronic city – APC junction – Chandapura – Electronic city) accounted for about 32-35 Km’s.

Early morning ride was very lovely, the roads were empty and I could feel the firmness and power of the bicycle. The bike moves like a lightening in flat roads and feels very smooth in slopy inclines. Couple of times I could test the extreme upper-end gears and it resulted in real fast pace and power.

Observations :

The handle adjustment really helped and I did not have any back pain this time. But still I could feel a slight numbness in the wrists. May be because of the body weight falling on arms. Need to lift the handle a bit more next time.
The absence of shock absorbers can be felt in non paved roads. But i feel that it is not a fact to worry because the bike can take the descent  bumpy roads with it’s solid frame and hybrid tyres if not the rocky one’s. I am not happy with the brakes because whenever I apply the brake, I noticed that the bike gets dragged for a while without immediate stoppage. This is only when I tried to stop from higher speeds. I do not know if this is the case with other bikes too or may be it is because of the high momentum. The pedals make slight noise at times and there is a noise when you shift the gears too. At the higher gear combinations like 3-6 and 3-7, the chain touches the derailers and produces a noise. All these boil down to mechanical adjustments and need to get them corrected with the dealer.

I am very happy with the performance of ACT 110. Looking forward for more rides. A 150 KM ride from Sakleshpur to Madikeri is in pipeline.

  2. Hi guys, I bought ACT110 in September LY. I ride generaly 3 days in a week averaging 18-20 kms. each day. The ride gives pretty good excercise for my lower body & its a pleasure to move around in a bike like ACT 110. During monsoon I am planning to have mud guards. Guys give me some idea, because I do not want to spoil the beauty of the bike by adding some odd mudguards. Cheers..

  3. I am from Sivasagar, Assam. My nearest Hercules Store is in Guwahati, which is 400 kms from my place. Therefore I have genuine problem with spares of my bike. I don’t like those plastic fenders. I am wondering whether I can procure some steel mudguards that fits propoerly on act100 & then get painted with similar colors, that also be fitted only during monsoon periods.

    • Pranab, Since you are staying so far and you don’t have a hercules store near by, isn’t it better to visit any local bicycle store near you with your ACT and check if you can find something that fits in and customize it? Here in Bangalore, I saw couple of mudguard sets in Decathlon store as well as RR cycle shops, they are not of ACT though. Need a bit of customization.

      • Planning to pick ACT110 as well, but saw some reviews regarding defect seat bolt. Have you also experienced this issue or is it an isolated case?

      • Kartik,
Sorry for the delayed response. I haven’t experienced any defects in seat bolt. However the seat shaft has got a minor bent. I feel no fault with the shaft in itself. Reason may be that I increased the seat height to maximum. Also I used to use the rear part of the seat more often during up hills and carried heavy back packs a couple of times.
Except this I don’t find any issues with the seat.

  5. Hey Guys, Planning to buy ACT 110 next week from Imperial metal works, chickpet, any feedback about the bike would be helpful. One of the dealers suggesting to go for Hercules Roadeo series with shockers. Please suggest.

  6. Bought Act110 yesterday from RR cycles Ulsoor Road after trying few other bikes in same range and this bike is really good. I tried bikes with suspension etc but when you drive this bike, you will feel the speed and lightness instantly. Today is my second day only hence cant comment about techincal aspects but the ride is very smooth.

  7. How would u rate A-300 or A-100 against Ryder Act 110??
I want a bicycle for about 20 kms everyday city ride…please help.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @Vinay,
Both A-100 and A-300 are MTB’s. Personally i would prefer a roadbike or hybrid for a day today city ride. And ACT110 is a hybrid. Since I do not have much techcical info about the pre said MTB’s i will not be able to comment more.
Before buying one, please do have a test ride with bike, it is quite important to chose a bike which suits your physique, especially the height.

  8. Hi guys,

  9. Hi guys,

bought a new act 110s yesterday. I am wondering it’s 18 speed (not 21) and cost me 8500 in Gujarat. it’s weight is around 13kg. Today rear V break is broken while I was riding on road even with slow speed.

    • Lifemojo.com, playgroundonline.com, decathlon.in all sell BTWIN make quick-release clamps etc. You could order online.

  12. Not sure why my previous attempt at replying didn’t seem to go thru, so if you see 2 similar comments you’d know that something like this happened :-)

Try out lifemojo.com, playgroundonline.com, decathlon.in for those quick-release clamps, and you should find some BTWIN make ones (I think they are pretty much universal in size) online. Cost should be around or less then Rs.200 per pc.
